Project Architect / Emerging Leader

Somerville, MA

ThoughtCraft Architects is seeking an experienced Project Architect with approximately 8+ years of professional experience to join our Somerville studio and take on a significant role in the continued growth of our practice.

We are an award-winning, design-driven architecture firm with studios in Somerville, MA and Durham, NC. Our work spans mixed-use and multifamily, higher education and institutional projects, adaptive reuse and historic preservation, commercial work, and modern residential design. Across project types, we share a commitment to thoughtful design, sustainability, craft, and creating places of lasting value.

The Opportunity

This position is for an architect who has developed strong design, technical, and project management skills and is ready for greater responsibility, influence, and leadership.

You'll lead projects from early design through construction, work directly with the firm's partners and clients, coordinate consultant teams, mentor emerging staff, and help strengthen how we design and deliver our work.

As a growing practice, we offer something different from a traditional large-firm career path: a direct voice in projects and studio culture, close collaboration with firm leadership, and a genuine opportunity to grow into a leadership role within the practice.

What You'll Do

  • Lead projects from design through construction administration

  • Guide project teams and coordinate multidisciplinary consultants

  • Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, and collaborators

  • Maintain high standards for design, technical documentation, and project delivery

  • Mentor and support emerging staff

  • Collaborate with firm leadership on design, applied research, client strategy, business development, and studio initiatives

  • Help improve the tools, standards, and processes that support our growing practice

Who You Are

  • Approximately 8+ years of professional architectural experience

  • Licensed architect or actively pursuing licensure

  • Strong design sensibility with excellent technical and detailing skills

  • Experience managing projects, teams, consultants, schedules, and client relationships

  • Experience with multifamily/mixed-use, institutional, commercial, or adaptive reuse projects

  • Proficient in Revit; SketchUp, Enscape, and Adobe Creative Suite experience preferred

  • Strong communicator who enjoys collaboration and mentoring

  • Interested in sustainability, resilience, mass timber, adaptive reuse, and thoughtful placemaking

Why ThoughtCraft?

You'll find the creative energy and close collaboration of a boutique design studio combined with a growing focus on the project delivery, systems, and operational discipline of a larger practice.

We offer competitive compensation and benefits with 401(k), flexible work policies, a supportive studio culture, meaningful design work, and direct access to firm leadership and clients.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who wants their influence to extend beyond individual projects—to help shape a practice.

To apply: Send a brief letter of interest, resume, and portfolio to studio@ThoughtCraftArchitects.com with “Somerville Project Architect” in the subject line.
