Natural Light & Captivating Views: The Franklin Residence

The Franklin Residence is a single-family home situated on a slope. Imagined like a rock outcropping on the hillside, this home’s simple form is rich with natural light and captivating views. The roof tilts with the slope of the hillside to accentuate the natural form of the land.

In this blog, we will explore the innovative design elements of the Franklin Residence that make it a standout project.

Skylights: Bringing the Outdoors In

One of the most important features of the Franklin Residence is the use of skylights. Skylights allow natural light to flow into the home in a much more dynamic way than windows alone. The movement of the clouds and the seasons create a vibrant atmosphere within the home that ebbs and flows with the changing moments of the day. By bringing the outdoors in, the skylights enhance the inhabitants' relationship with nature and make the home feel more connected to the beauty of the outdoors.

Embracing the Edge

When you have a sloped property, it’s interesting to play with it to enhance the human experience of the slope. For example, entering the front door and walking through the living room as a flat surface, then coming out to the deck and finding yourself suddenly 14’ in the air above the land. This is part of experiencing the natural edge that occurs here with a quick drop in land elevation. The view of the sky and the trees from the back deck are beautiful.

We chose to see the thin-sloped site as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. The tilted design draws the eye to the nature outside and inside it organizes the double-height living at the edge, with a second-floor loft and a grand primary suite.

Our goal was to create a space that would harmonize with the natural surroundings and connect the inhabitants with their environment. By embracing the edge, we created a sense of drama within the home that matches the experience of the land and enhances the overall living of the residents.

Warmth & Modernity Work Together

The Franklin Residence is a blend of warmth and modernity. The exterior is wrapped in corrugated and perforated metal to accentuate the solidity of a rock outcropping. Wood accents warm the entry and lower floor areas where walls can be touched. The home features an open floor plan, a large window wall, and concrete floors. Wood cabinetry and accent walls warm the modern interior, creating a sense of coziness in the midst of the sleek and modern design.
