Ivey-Ellington House Relocation and Rehabilitation

The restoration of the Ivey–Ellington House demonstrates how preservation can extend far beyond protecting a historic structure. By repositioning the building as an active civic destination, the project reconnects the community to Cary’s heritage while contributing to the social and environmental vitality of downtown.

Originally constructed in 1887, the Ivey–Ellington House is one of the few remaining examples of Gothic Revival architecture in North Carolina. To ensure its continued relevance within a rapidly evolving downtown, the Town of Cary relocated the home to a prominent site adjacent to Downtown Cary Park, transforming a once-vulnerable structure into a lasting public asset. The building now serves as offices for park staff. It also includes a public history room that invites residents and visitors to engage directly with Cary’s history through tours and educational programming.

ThoughtCraft Architects led the restoration, reconstructing lost elements and uncovering historical details to ensure authenticity while adapting the building for contemporary use. The project demonstrates how architects bridge preservation, technical expertise, and community vision to deliver lasting public value.

In collaboration with WithersRavenel, the surrounding landscape was reimagined as a small public park that strengthens pedestrian connectivity and social interaction downtown. Sustainable strategies, including rain gardens, permeable paving, Silva Cells, and preservation of mature trees, establish a resilient approach to stormwater management while reinforcing the site’s public character. This fusion of historic preservation and green infrastructure reflects a forward-looking approach to public investment.

Today, the Ivey–Ellington House stands as a visible counterpoint between Cary’s past and its future - demonstrating how thoughtful design can honor heritage, support civic use, and enhance quality of life. The project highlights the essential role architects play in shaping communities that are culturally rich, environmentally responsible, and economically vibrant for generations to come.
