NC State College of Education Dean’s Suite

How do we balance the competing desires for collaboration and privacy in the modern workplace?

NC State College of Education - Dean’s Suite

The dean’s suite for the College of Education sought a full renovation to create spaces that foster connection, facilitate gathering, and provide a more sophisticated ambiance for hosting staff, donors, and visitors to the college. Additionally, they needed to address several technical issues, including cross-talk between offices and uneven space heating.

The space was designed around two primary common areas. The lobby was reconfigured to include a lounge area with a courtyard view and ample natural light. The collaborative space was opened up to better serve the faculty’s needs and provide more equitable access to the offices. The private offices were acoustically isolated and outfitted with transom lighting to allow borrowed natural light to flow into the common areas and interior offices. An interactive digital display was installed in the lobby, enabling administrative assistants to allocate more time to higher-level tasks. Throughout the suite, natural wood millwork adds warmth and enhances the inviting, professional ambiance.

The project scope included a needs assessment, programming, design, cost estimation, construction documents, engineering, and construction. This dean’s suite is part of our on-call work with NC State University.
