Gloucester Townhouses
How can multi-family housing be introduced into a single-family neighborhood while maintaining the scale and rhythm of its surroundings?
Gloucester Townhouses
Set within a quiet residential area of Gloucester, this project reimagines townhome living within a neighborhood of detached houses. The design breaks the building into a series of connected homes that reflect the scale and rhythm of the surrounding streetscape.
The project is conceived as a collection of distinct townhomes that together form a cohesive whole. By stepping the units along the property line, the massing reinforces the rhythm of nearby homes while maximizing the potential of the site. A stone-clad base anchors the building to Gloucester’s rocky coastal terrain and houses the garages, while weathered wood cladding above responds to the maritime environment and will gradually develop a natural patina over time. The homes employ a reverse floor plan, placing bedrooms on the second floor and living spaces on the third to capture harbor views and natural light. Private roof decks and balconies extend the living experience outdoors, framing views of the harbor while maintaining privacy. Circulation is organized around a single one-way drive aisle that discreetly serves the garages, reinforcing the quiet residential character of the development.
